Whatever his personal troubles, the Pompey manager is eyeing the most unlikely of Champions League qualifications, and yet Redknapp is plagued by the nagging realisation that several players will soon be jetting away from chilly Hampshire to play in the African Cup of Nations.

The Londoner is resigned to losing the likes of midfield trio Papa Bouba Diop, Sulley Muntari and John Utaka — plus striker Kanu — for several weeks and will be left with only 14 outfield players.
