Wrexham set to axe boss Carey

BRIAN CAREY could be removed tomorrow as Wrexham manager. A statement posted on the club’s website last night says that an “experienced senior manager” would be appointed tomorrow to work alongside present staff.

Dragons chairman Neville Dickens suggested Carey may continue at the club, but not as the manager.

“Brian’s done a good job, but we need to review the situation with the directors,” said Dickens. “We’re in discussions with a number of people and hope to announce the new appointment on Thursday.”

Wrexham are currently one spot off the foot of League Two with nine points from 13 games.

Ex-Irish defender Carey took over as caretaker manager at the Racecourse in January following the sacking of Denis Smith, moving up from the backroom staff into his first senior role.

The Cork man helped lift Wrexham out of the relegation zone with four wins from their final five games, securing their league status on the final day of the season and winning a two-year permanent contract.

But having had a chance to build his squad over the summer, Wrexham’s struggles have continued.

Ex-Dragons boss Smith and Wales assistant manager Roy Evans — who has been helping with training at the Racecourse — have already ruled themselves out of the running for the new Wrexham job.
