New Real boss Schuster targets Arsenal starlet Fabregas
Speaking yesterday after being confirmed at the helm at the Bernabeu, the former Germany international immediately identified the Gunners’ young midfielder as one of his favourite players.
The 20-year-old has regularly been linked with a move back to his homeland, and in particular Real and Barcelona — where he spent time as a youth player before moving to England.
He had, however, appeared to commit his future to Arsene Wenger’s side this summer in the wake of Thierry Henry’s departure for Barca, but Schuster’s comments seemingly make an approach by the Spanish champions inevitable.
“I like Cesc Fabregas, he plays in the same position as I did in my playing days,” said Schuster, who left his role with Getafe to join Real.
“He has improved a lot in England, and learnt a lot from Arsene Wenger, a coach who I admire and who has done over the years a very good job with young players.
“I believe he is one of the few players in his position that can carry a team on his back, and when I say teams, I mean quality teams.”
The prospect of Fabregas following legendary striker Henry out of the Emirates Stadium is a nightmare scenario for the Gunners, although the club are unlikely to be receptive to any Madrid approach.
Meanwhile, William Gallas has questioned Arsenal’s transfer policy this summer and wants to discuss plans for the season with Wenger.
The departure of Henry has been offset by the arrival of Eduardo Da Silva but Gallas has revealed that some players at the Emirates are unsure of what the future holds for the club.
Arsenal’s rivals in the Premier League’s ‘big four’ have significantly strengthened their squad for the new season and Tottenham have also been active in the market, while Wenger has added Lukasz Fabianski and Eduardo.
The 29-year-old said: “What is sure is that several players are questioning the club’s future.
“Around us, all the teams are recruiting but what is planned to compensate for the departure of Titi Henry?
“I am not at Arsenal to play for third place. It is necessary to recruit players of reputation because the young players have many qualities but the season is very, very long.
“The young players are thirsty for victories but Arsenal must obtain results, win titles in this period. If not, we will have to change policy and do the same as the other teams: recruit with more means.”
