Dancing with Wolves

THIS week it was revealed that Scottish-born Brian Kennedy, the multi-millionaire owner of the Sale Sharks rugby team, is Graeme Souness’ partner in a £20 million bid to buy Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That bid was rejected but, although disappointed, Souness has indicated that the offer remains on the table.

“People from my generation will remember Wolves as a big football club and they still have enormous potential,” he says. “So my partner and I made a serious bid for it. Unfortunately they said no to us but that’s not the end of it. If Wolves could get into the Premiership and stay there, they can become one of the top ten clubs in England.

“If this thing comes off, I wouldn’t be going in as manager, I’d be going in as an Executive Director. I understand how football clubs work. I understand what a manager is feeling when things are not going well and I’d like to think I was a link for him and would be supportive of him.

“Would I be seen as a threat by the manager? No, from day one we’d have to understand how the relationship would work. Since I’m putting my own money into it, I would see myself as having a say in what players the manager fancied and that’s something we’d have to agree on. But the day-to-day football side would be entirely the manager’s.

“This is an opportunity and we will continue to pursue it but, if it doesn’t happen, it’s not like I’m in a race to go out and buy any football club.”
