Given injury adds to Staunton woes

SHAY GIVEN will have a scan on his injured groin today as fears grow of another blow for Republic of Ireland manager Steve Staunton ahead of the February 7 Euro 2008 clash with San Marino.

Given limped out of Saturday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham, having landed awkwardly as he tried to claim a cross.

He was treated on the field but was unable to go on and Glenn Roeder said he will be assessed today.

“It’s hard to find the words to describe somebody who hardly ever missed a game in five seasons but suffered a shocking injury, ironically at West Ham, that required an operation, and now he has damaged his groin,” he said.

“We are just fortunate to have a goalkeeper in Steve Harper who is undoubtedly of Premiership class, but we just hope Shay is not going to be out a long time.”
