Hughes confident of reaching knock-out stages despite injuries

BLACKBURN’S Australian international Brett Emerton has been ruled out of tonight’s UEFA Cup clash against Basle because of a hamstring strain.

Morten Gamst Pedersen (ankle) and Shabani Nondo (shin) are also rated doubtful for this group game.

Rovers boss Mark Hughes is confident his side can take another step towards the knockout stages tonight even if he is down on numbers.

Hughes said: “These things happen and we have to get on with it. We have a decent squad and I am not worried about three defeats in a row.

“I have been reasonably pleased by the level of performance, apart from the first half of the West Ham game.

“We should have beaten Bolton and we did fine against Chelsea.

“Perhaps we will have more luck in that respect when we face Basle.”

However, on the plus side influential Welsh midfielder Robbie Savage could be available. He was ruled out of the West Ham match through suspension when he was also suffering from fluid on the knee.

Savage is now on the mend and Hughes said: “He trained for the first 20-25 minutes today, then went to do some extra work with the physio.

“It is a case of waiting to see how he is in the morning before making a decision.”

Blackburn are hoping to build on a great performance in the opening game when they came from behind to defeat Wisla Krakow in Poland.

Hughes said: “It would be a real shame if we do not capitalise on that result. If we can win our home games it will put us in great shape in the group.

“Basle are a decent side with a good European pedigree. We have to respect their qualities.”

Meanwhile, UEFA have rejected an appeal from Wisla Krakow defender Nikola Mijailovic against the five-match ban for racially abusing Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy.

Mijailovic, 24, was found guilty of making racist remarks towards the South African at the end of the UEFA Cup tie between the sides, which Rovers won 2-1, on October 19.
