The agony and the agony

ALL who read Shay Given’s account of the agony he experienced following his recent freak injury will have felt the Donegal man’s pain. Or, rather, felt relieved that they didn’t have to.

But even your so-called ordinary, everyday, run of the mill sporting accident can bring tears to the eyes.

The story is told of cricketer Brian Close being carted off to hospital to have a dislocated shoulder put back in. Close admitted that the pain was excruciating but an unsympathetic nurse was having none of it. “There’s a mother upstairs having twins and she’s not making a fuss,” she rebuked him.
