Wembley chiefs had bid for either final, despite the stadium not yet being finished but it is understood UEFA want the stadium to be operational before they will consider it. European football’s governing body did confirm the City of Manchester Stadium will host the 2008 UEFA Cup final.

The venues for the finals for the next two seasons were announced at UEFA’s executive committee meeting in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The 2008 Champions League final will be in the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, and a year later in Rome’s Olimpico stadium.

The 2008 UEFA Cup final will be held in the City of Manchester stadium, and in 2009 in Istanbul’s Sukru Saracoglu stadium.

The executive committee also decided to postpone the vote on the Euro 2012 hosts until April next year.
