Ossie’s ashes buried at the Bridge

THE ashes of Peter Osgood — the king of Stamford Bridge — were buried beneath the penalty spot in front of The Shed yesterday.

Ossie’s ashes buried at the Bridge

Chelsea gave their flamboyant legendary centre forward, who died earlier this year, a fitting memorial as 2,700 fans in The Shed joined with a galaxy of former stars, family and friends on the pitch to pay their tribute.

The occasion — and the weather — matched the style of the larger-than-life Osgood, scorer of 150 goals in 380 games for the club. Claps of thunder greeted the Coldstream Guards band as they marched onto the Stamford Bridge pitch through a guard of honour of Chelsea Pensioners.

Torrential rain failed to prevent Osgood’s old captain Ron “Chopper” Harris, former manager Tommy Docherty and ex-goalkeeper Peter Bonetti from paying their tributes and the sun finally shone as Osgood’s ashes were laid to rest under the penalty spot.
