IT WAS a good week to dump ‘bad news’, as the British government likes to suggest, but I thought it inappropriate that Clive Woodward’s departure from Southampton should pass without comment.

This man, quite ludicrously, thought that he could transform his thoughts on rugby union to the football arena. Harry Redknapp, then manager at the club, clearly believed it a preposterous notion. He went to Portsmouth.

Thankfully, the new regime at St Mary’s thought the time appropriate to say goodbye. An esteemed colleague thought they’d been polite. I thought they’d merely said, appropriately: “Piss off Sir Clive.”
