Venables in talks for vacant Magpies post

NEWCASTLE chairman Freddy Shepherd will attempt to end his search for a new manager early this week.

Venables in talks for vacant Magpies post

Shepherd has spent the last seven days assessing his options after dismissing Bobby Robson last Monday, and with United’s home clash with Blackburn looming on Saturday, he will make an early appointment to give the new man as much time as possible to prepare his side for a vital game.

It was no surprise when former England boss Terry Venables revealed yesterday he has held preliminary talks with the club after it emerged last week he was a contender for the job.

United’s interest in Geordie Steve Bruce is genuine, despite Birmingham’s repeated insistence he is not available, and although Newcastle know he has a long-term contract, they have not given up hope of attracting him.

A bewildering number of names have been linked with the vacant position with Sam Allardyce, Steve McClaren, Martin O’Neill, Alan Shearer, David O’Leary, Gerard Houllier, Kevin Keegan, Alan Curbishley and George Graham said to be among the candidates.

Several have ruled themselves out, others have had their clubs do the same thing, while still more were never in with a chance.

It may be that Shepherd will consider a temporary appointment until his top target becomes available. Newcastle fans can look forward to another eventful week, though after the season they have endured so far, they will hope for better news this time around.
