Ronaldinho wants full-time striker’srole at Barcelona

RONALDINHO has urged Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard to gamble on using him as an out-and-out striker this season.

The Brazilian is on a mission to cause maximum devastation to Primera Liga defences and feels that the best position from which to do so is as a central frontman.

An adaptable player, the World Cup winner can play on the flanks, as a striker, or in an advanced central midfield role.

“On the wings at times you pass a long time without touching the ball,” he said.

“But when I play up front I have more of the ball at my feet and can create a lot more danger.”

The former Paris St Germain and Gremio player has joined a team which Rijkaard is restructuring, following his appointment as Raddy Antic’s replacement.

Barca spent big this summer in an attempt to build a squad which can challenge Real Madrid’s supremacy in the Primera Liga, and €30 million Ronaldinho has been the most expensive recruit of all.

“I need to say that the team has to improve for the start of the league, we have to improve in all aspects: defence, attack and playing as a team,” he said.

“This is a young team which has to connect with each other. At the moment we are in a phase of preparation and we are not 100% yet, but when the start of the season comes we will be ready.”

The club have not been Spanish champions since 1998 and came close to relegation last season.
