Dicker answers Givens’ call

UCD’s Gary Dicker has been called up by Republic of Ireland U21 manager Don Givens for tomorrow evening’s UEFA European Cup qualifying tie against France at Turner’s Cross (7.45pm).

Dicker plays midfield for the Belfield side in the eircom Premier Division and has been drafted in to replace Sheffield Wednesday’s Glen Whelan, forced out through injury.

Dicker was involved in the Ireland U19 squad last season and was part of their successful trip to Italy as well as the La Manga tournament.

This is the second enforced change in the squad Stephen Dawson (Mansfield Town) has already been brought in for the for the injured Darren Potter (Liverpool).

Roy O’Donovan, who scored an injury-time winner for Cork City against Finn Harps in Saturday’s FAI Carlsberg Cup quarter-final, came through unscathed and trained with the squad yesterday.
