History helped me make wonder save, says Kiely

Kiely made the best save of the goalless draw when he denied Rory Delap, diving to his left to save the former Derby man's shot from the edge of the box.

And the Charlton goalkeeper said afterwards: "I faced Rory in Ireland training sessions for four or five years so I had a little chuckle with him at the end."

Kiely continued: "Both teams will feel there was more in the tank and maybe a bit more quality. But if that's the case you need hard work and endeavour and both teams had that.

"It was a bit frustrating for us tonight, after two home victories the onus was on us to attack. There wasn't a lack of application on our part but we had to make sure we were hard to beat after losing 4-0 at Manchester City in our last game.

"It was important to get a point, a clean sheet and a foundation to build on."

Saints defender Andreas Jakobsson added: "With a bit of luck we would have got one or two goals tonight.

"Hopefully, we've stopped the rot. We needed three points today but maybe we'll get them in the next game. We played very well at the back and the whole team were aggressive.

"We had a couple of chances and perhaps deserved to win but the draw is okay."

Charlton manager Alan Curbishley admitted he was pleased with a point after watching Southampton increase the tempo in the second half.

"I'm happy to get a point because we haven't played well tonight," he told Sky Sports.

His Southampton counterpart Steve Wigley was less satisfied with the solitary point, though. "We did enough to win the game, the players worked very hard and created chances," said Wigley.
