Bergkamp to stay a Gunner
After Arsenal’s FA Cup triumph over Man United, Bergkamp revealed he had been granted the one-year contract extension he has craved.
Although it is thought the 36-year-old has been forced to accept reduced terms, a lucrative testimonial has been incorporated in the deal.
And once he has completed his 10th season with the Gunners, Bergkamp confirmed his intention to retire and miss out on Arsenal beginning their new life away from Highbury.
“Maybe if I was a different age, I would try to play on so I could play in the new stadium but I think that will be beyond me. Next year will be my last. I will be 37 by then.
“It is good to get the new contract sorted out though. It means I can look forward again. There is also a testimonial to plan too but how and when has still to be finalised.”
Bergkamp’s contribution to the Arsenal cause since Bruce Rioch bought him from Inter Milan for £7.5million can hardly be underestimated.
“A team like Arsenal needs trophies. We have secured a place in the Champions League for next year but this was something special.
“The future is looking good,” he said. “This has been the year of the young players coming through. They have done really well and really strengthened the team. If we can keep this team together and let the youngsters develop, it will be fantastic.”
