The man who famously finished up in tears when he blasted a penalty over the bar in England's 1990 World Cup semi-final defeat to Germany, could only watch in disbelief as Fowler saw an injury-time effort saved by Mark Schwarzer which would have sent Manchester City into next season's UEFA Cup.
Instead, the Teessiders hung on for a 1-1 draw which allowed them to qualify for Europe for the second successive season and left Pearce to pick up his deflated striker and reflect on what might have been.
