Pearce backs Barton to overcome trauma

STUART PEARCE has backed Joey Barton to come through the trauma of seeing his brother Michael jailed for murder.

The Manchester City midfielder learned on Thursday his brother must serve 18 years in prison after being found guilty of the racist killing of Anthony Walker.

However, Barton has declared himself available to play against Charlton tomorrow.

And City manager Pearce believes getting out on the pitch may provide him with an escape.

“We had a quiet chat last night and he will be in the squad,” said Pearce.

“In some ways, going outside onto the bit of green will be a salvation to him.”
