Upson called up as doubts remain about Campbell

MATTHEW UPSON was last night called up to the England squad as defensive back-up after Sol Campbell became Sven-Goran Eriksson’s main doubt ahead of tomorrow’s friendly against Croatia.

Eriksson earlier suffered the first withdrawal from his 24-man squad when Owen Hargreaves was sent back to Bayern Munich for treatment on a groin injury sustained at the weekend.

While that left Danny Mills and Phil Neville contesting the right-back spot in the absence of Gary Neville, Eriksson also has question-marks over his central defensive pairing.

David Beckham and Emile Heskey missed training yesterday over weekend strains to their back and calf, respectively. Both are expected to train today.
