Gemmell says time is right for new Celtic record
The former Hoops defender was part of the famous 1967 side who became the first British team to lift the European Cup and they continued their success by going on a 17-game winning run that has not been beaten since 1968.
Martin O'Neill's current crop of players have already shown they have the potential to be as successful as Celtic's most famous team and they came close to lifting a European trophy of their own in last season's UEFA Cup final.
Their form has been equally impressive on the domestic front and they match the record of 17 wins on trot heading into tomorrow's Old Firm derby.
And Gemmell believes, almost 36 years later, the time is right for a new record to be made.
He said: "The more games Celtic win the better so I would be delighted to see them beat the record on Saturday.
"Records are there to be broken and Celtic are firing on all cylinders just now." Meanwhile Rangers manager Alex McLeish intends to buy British from now on.
Foreign imports Nuno Capucho, Paolo Vanoli, Egil Ostenstad and Emerson have failed to impress this season and the champions travel to Celtic tomorrow trailing their rivals by eight points in the Bank of Scotland Premier League.
McLeish has added Scotland international midfielder Gavin Rae to his squad and hinted more signings may follow.
If they do they will be experienced campaigners with a background in the British game.
He said: "Scottish identity, British identity call it what you like but I want more of his kind of player at Rangers.
"I think that is important vital in fact. When I say that, as daft as it sounds, it might even be a foreigner who has played in Britain and who knows what the game is all about in this country."
Finances are tight at Ibrox at the moment, but McLeish has his eyes on new recruits. He said: "I will only do something if I can find a player that can make an impact.
