Last gasp winner from Vieri as Italian clubs dominate again

A LAST-MINUTE header from substitute Christian Vieri gave Inter Milan a dramatic 2-1 win over Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League Group B.

Last gasp winner from Vieri as Italian clubs dominate again

Inter had taken a 23rd-minute lead through Daniele Adani, who fired home after a Fabio Cannavaro header was parried by Dynamo keeper Olexander Shovkovsky.

The Ukrainians drew level 11 minutes later when Inter keeper Francesco Toldo failed to hold a harmless low cross from Tiberiu Ghioane’s and Serhiy Fyodorov reacted quickly to drive the ball into the unguarded goal.

But in the final minute, Vieri, rose to glance home a Kily Gonzalez free-kick to give Inter maximum points from their opening two games and top spot in the group.

* Roque Santa Cruz headed a late equaliser giving 10-man Bayern Munich a 1-1 draw away to Anderlecht in Group A.

Peru striker Claudio Pizarro was sent off for two bookable offences after 35 minutes.

Croatian Ivica Mornar struck in the 53rd to put the Belgian side ahead, side-footing the ball into the net from close range.

There was little German World Cup keeper Oliver Khan, playing his 100th in European club match, could do to prevent the goal.

But Santa Cruz and his fellow substitute Hasan Salihamidzic combined in the 74th minute to grab a point for Bayern and send them a point clear at the top of the group standings with four points from two matches.

* A double strike from Pavel Nedved gave Juventus a 2-1 Group D win at Olympiakos.

Olympiakos’s Christian Karembeu crossed in the 10th minute for Ieroklis Stoltidis to open the scoring for the Greeks with a looping header.

But Juventus responded in their only attack of the half, Nedved lashing in a low 21st minute free kick.

Nedved wrapped up the points 11 minutes from time with a long-distance drive that stunned home goalkeeper Fanis Katergiannakis.

* A deflected Sergio free kick and a Walter Pandiani penalty earned disciplined Deportivo Coruna a 2-0 win at home to PSV Eindhoven in Group C.

Deportivo took the lead after 20 minutes when Sergio’s free kick clipped the edge of the PSV wall and flew past keeper Ronald Waterreus.

The Spanish side’s second arrived six minutes after the break with Uruguayan striker Pandiani converting from the spot after Juan Carlos Valeron had been pushed by Andre Ooijer.

* Fernando Morientes struck twice to inspire Monaco to a comfortable 4-0 Group C victory over AEK Athens.

The Spanish international striker, on loan from Real Madrid, scored after 27 and 57 minutes as in-form Monaco extended their unbeaten run to eight games and are clear leaders of Group C.

Monaco have six points from two games, two more than Deportivo Coruna. AEK have one point and PSV none.

Ludovic Giuly opened the scoring for the French league leaders in the 23rd minute; the Greeks, adventurous early on, faded once they fell behind.

Morientes, who was given a standing ovation when he was withdrawn with 15 minutes remaining, has now scored three goals in his two Champions League appearances for Monaco.

His replacement Dado Prso struck Monaco’s fourth in the 86th minute when he burst through the middle of AEK’s soft defence and scored with a rising 25-metre drive.

* A second-half strike from Xabi Alonso earned Real Sociedad a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Galatasaray in Group D.

Striker Darko Kovacevic netted Sociedad’s first in the third minute and, although the Turkish side dominated much of the play in midfield, strikers Hakan Sukur and Ergun Penbe failed to convert their chances.

Sukur finally got an equaliser just after the hour mark, but 12 minutes later Alonso struck the winner to give Real two wins out of two in their campaign so far.

Galatasaray’s frustration boiled over in the 83rd minute when Hasan Sas lunged at Mikel Aranburu with an ill-timed tackle from behind and was sent off.
