Savage ‘disgusted’ by Matthaus approach

ROBBIE SAVAGE slammed the behaviour of Hungary coach Lothar Matthaus as disgusting and claimed he was headbutted and spat on during the torrid final moments of Wales’ victory in Budapest on Wednesday night.

A patched-up Wales team produced a brave and committed performance to clinch a 2-1 win.

But it was the uproar at the end, when Matthaus rushed on to the pitch to stand eyeball to eyeball with Savage, which marred the night.

Seconds from the end, Savage clashed with defender Zoltan Peto, who had just got away with a horror tackle on Earnshaw. But it was the showdown with Matthaus, a World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, which threatened to ignite proceedings.

“I looked up and saw Lothar Matthaus running towards me, I couldn’t believe it,” said the Birmingham midfielder.

“How can a legend, a man of such stature and achievement, stoop to sprinting 50 yards to remonstrate with me because he thought I was winding everybody up?”
