Dean Richards headed Spurs ahead and Teddy Sheringham increased the advantage only for Junichi Inamoto to pull a goal back before Steed Malbranque levelled with a penalty six minutes from time.

That was the cue for a desperate spell of late pressure from Fulham and although Spurs keeper Kasey Keller looked to have denied the home side, Malbranque clinched victory deep into injury-time. In the early stages, and amid all of the hustle and bustle of a London derby, there was precious little imagination on display at this stage.
