Mourinho watched his Chelsea team reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup by beating League One side Colchester, and he had plenty of grounds for optimism. It wasn’t Joe Cole’s two late goals that made him smile, but the sight of muddy puddles appearing all over the club’s much-maligned pitch as pouring rain turned the already uneven surface into a quagmire.
