Massimo wins it for lucky Milan

PSV 3 AC Milan 1 (3-3 agg, Milan win on away goals)

Outfought throughout, Carlo Ancelotti's men can consider themselves extremely fortunate to have survived a frenetic PSV onslaught.

The game appeared destined for extra-time when PSV surged into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Ji-Sung Park and Phillip Cocu.

But Milan got out of jail when Kaka crossed for Ambrosini to head past Dida and spark wild celebrations among the visiting contingent.

There was still time for Cocu to score again but it was not enough.

Milan looked out of sorts from the outset and never seemed to settle in the first half, giving the ball away with careless regularity.

PSV, by contrast, clearly believed they were capable of getting back into the tie.

PSV coach Guus Hiddink talked of patience being the key but his men appeared to have other ideas as they came out and attacked from the start.

Paolo Maldini had to be brave to deny Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink after just five minutes following Jefferson Farfan's knock-down.

It was only a temporary reprieve for Milan, however, as PSV took the lead with their next serious attack.

Park played the ball into the area and was on hand to hammer it home when Hesselink tried to stepped inside Jaap Stam.

For all their experience of the big occasion, Milan were stunned and they could have fallen further behind after 26 minutes when Hesselink headed Mark van Bommel's cross on to the bar.

The visitors had been thrown out of their elegant stride and could only muster two chances of note Heurelho Gomes palming a Kaka cross away from under his bar and Alex denying the same player with a crucial block.

The second half started in the same vein as the first with PSV pouring forward in droves and creating numerous chances.

Park, one of the outstanding performers on the night as he was in the first leg, mis-kicked when well placed while desperate defending kept out Wilfred Bouma's low drive.

The hosts got the goal which brought the aggregate scores level after 65 minutes Young-Pyo Lee crossing for Cocu to head into the net.

It had been a stunning display of commitment and skill by PSV and they almost went 3-0 ahead after 80 minutes, substitute Robert bringing a fine save out of Dida.

But the game was to have the cruellest of conclusions for the hosts.

Kaka was given too much space down the left and his delivery picked out an unmarked Ambrosini and he found the corner of the net.

Still PSV found the energy to keep going forward and they at least had the final say on the night when Cocu fired home a wonderful volley.

Harsh and unjust it may have been, and the goal will hardly have been cheered on Merseyside, but it means it is Milan who will face Rafael Benitez's men in Istanbul on May 25.
