Ireland U-16s only draw

Republic of Ireland U-16 0Sweden U-16 0

The crowd of 700 were disappointed as Ireland’s busy build-up play failed to yield the goals it deserved, a long range effort from Lorcan Fitzgerald that shaved the post the closest Ireland came to winning it.

Sweden rarely threatened the Ireland goal though they did have a goal ruled out in the 28th minute when an indirect free kick from captain Andreas Landgren sailed unaided into the net after Ireland goalkeeper David Bevan had slipped.

REP OF IRELAND U-16: Bevan (Aston Villa); Callaghan (Millwall), Donoghue (Cherry Orchard), Spillane (Norwich City), Fitzgerald (Shelbourne); Cahillane (Belvedere), Day (MK Dons), Carey (Shelbourne), McDermott (Cherry Orchard); Byrne (Belvedere), Hutton (Tottenham Hotspur).

Subs: Onwubiko (St Kevin’s Boys) for Cahillane, Lyons (Crystal Palace) for Hutton (both 50 mins), O’Toole (Tottenham Hotspur) for Carey (55 mins), Redmond (Cherry Orchard) for Bevan (60 mins).

Referee: T Connolly (Dublin).
