With both nations having already secured their participation in the semi-finals, the game was an open affair in which Germany twice took the lead through Schalke pair Kevin Kuranyi and Gerald Asamoah.

However, needing to win to finish top of the group, Argentina fought back on both occasions and took a share of the spoils with strikes from Juan Roman Riquelme and Esteban Cambiasso.
