Robert pledges loyalty to Newcastle

The 27-year-old Frenchman, who has found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons too often in recent weeks, was quoted yesterday as saying he was at odds with his English colleagues at St James’ Park and could be ready to quit the club which signed him for £10 million in the summer of 2001.

Robert claims to have been stunned by what was billed as an “incredible attack” by him on Newcastle, and contacted manager Bobby Robson through team-mate Olivier Bernard to protest his innocence.
