Karembeu calls it a day

FORMER Middlesbrough midfielder Christian Karembeu has announced his retirement.

Karembeu calls it a day

The 34-year-old former France international, who won the 1998 World Cup, Euro 2000 and the 2001 Confederations Cup, had been left without a club since spending six months with Ligue 1 side Bastia at the end of last season.

“I am stopping my career now and I will keep following football my way,” he said.

“I have no regrets, this is a well-thought out decision. I just want to start another career.

Karembeu started his career with Nantes in 1990 before having spells with Italian side Sampdoria, Spain’s Real Madrid, Boro, Greece’s Olympiakos, Swiss side Servette and finally Bastia last season.

He won the French title with Nantes in 1995, the Champions League with Real Madrid in 1998 as well as the Greek league twice in 2002 and 2003.

He made his international debut in 1992 and played 53 times for his country.
