Supersub Vaz Te salvages point for Bolton

Guimaraes 1 Bolton 1

The 19-year-old striker equalised with three minutes remaining with a marvellous finish after a neat lay-off from El-Hadji Diouf.

It was a prompt response by Bolton who had gone behind in the 85th minute when Marak Saganowski scored with a diving header after slack marking.

There was a moment of danger for Bolton four minutes into the game after Dario Monteiro burst through the middle but Jussi Jaaskelainen got down quickly to smother the shot.

Jaaskelainen smothered a shot from Saganowski in the 12th minute after he had found space on the edge of the area.

Bolton almost took the lead in the 32nd minute when Abdoulaye Faye flicked on a long throw and found Okocha.

Kevin Nolan, with seven goals to his credit, got away from his marker, but his close-range effort went wide of the post.

However, Guimaraes looked the most threatening of the two sides and were the first to threaten as play restarted.

Selim Benachour fired over the top in the 52nd minute after the ball had broken to him in the area and Jaaskelainen came to the rescue in the 57th minute when he saved Neca’s thunderbolt.

The visitors were beginning to lose the midfield battle and three minutes later Nakata was replaced by Gary Speed. Allardyce made another change in the 64th minute with Diouf coming on for Borgetti.

Stelios came close to making the breakthrough in the 76th minute after a marvellous through ball from Okocha but Marcio Paiva got down quickly to make a crucial block for Guimaraes.

Bolton were stunned in the 85th minute when Saganowski ghosted in at the far post to head home following a cross from Tiago Targino.

But the Trotters secured a point three minutes later when Vaz Te, who was born in Portugal, drove the ball into the net after a neat lay-off from Diouf.
