Kenny’s Christmas cheer at new Derry deal

DUBLINER Stephen Kenny last night signed a new two-year contract with Derry City that will keep him as supremo at the Brandywell until the end of the 2008 season.

Kenny’s Christmas cheer at new Derry deal

The 34-year-old manager, previously boss at Longford Town and Bohemians, first joined Derry in August 2004. In his first months in charge, Kenny managed to steer the Candystripes away from the dreaded relegation zone.

Last season outsiders Derry won the League Cup, beating UCD 2-1 in the final, and finished runners-up to champions Cork City in the eircom League Premier Division. They were also beaten 1-0 by Cork in the Carlsberg FAI Cup semi-finals at Turner's Cross.

"I still had a year of my initial contract to run but I am delighted that the Derry board have given me this new deal that keeps me at the Brandywell for another full three seasons. It is the perfect Christmas present," said Kenny.

"This is a young Derry side who can only get better and the new season cannot come soon enough for us. First there are the Setanta Cup games home and away to Linfield, Shelbourne and Glentoran.

"That will be excellent preparation for our participation in next season's UEFA Cup. I have an excellent relationship with our board of directors and the fans. Last season was only the start of what I hope will be even more success for the club."

First new signing for Kenny last night was former Republic of Ireland youth international defender Ken Oman, released earlier this week by Bohemians.

"Ken is a player for whom I have always had the highest regard. He is still only 23 and has loads of ability. I regard him as an excellent signing, having watched his progress since his days as a youth player," added Kenny.
