Battling Lyon secure passage

OLD TRAFFORD wasn’t the only Group D venue to see plenty of goals last night. Lyon ensured progression into the next round when they travelled to Fenerbahce.

They went behind on 14 minutes to Selchuk's drive, but the French outfit fought back to equalise before half-time through Essien.

Malouda steered home a low cross for Lyon's second goal in the 53rd minute, but the Turkish side fought back to equalise when Tuncay Sanli forced the ball home in the 73rd minute. Lyon substitute Honorato da Silva Nilmar scored twice in injury time for a French victory.

In Dynamo Kiev and Real Madrid's Group B meeting last night, Kiev were two up after 23 minutes through Yussuf and Verpakovskis, but Raul and Figo from a penalty had the sides level by half-time. The scoring dried up however, and the sides shared the honours.

Bayern Munich hosted Italian superpower Juventus in Group C. Alessandro Del Piero stole the win in the 89th minute when he snapped up a rebound.

Maccabi Tel Aviv were at home to Ajax in the other game in Group C.

Barukh Dego got Maccabi's first Champions League goal four minutes into the second half and managed a second on 57 minutes. Though Daniel de Ridder threw Ajax a lifeline with a goal in the 88th minute, Maccabi hung on to win.

In Group A Olimpiacos and Monaco had a tough tussle in Greece, with the home side eventually snatching a goal six minutes from time through Gabriel Schurrer.

Meanwhile, Roma welcomed Bayer Leverkusen to the Stadio Olimpico.

Berbatov grabbed a goal for the Germans with eight minutes left but three minutes into injury time, Vincenzo Montella conjured up a dramatic equaliser from Totti's backheel.
