Next season must be better, says Ferdinand

RIO FERDINAND is adamant that Manchester United supporters “deserve a lot more” from the team next year after a season of underachievement.

Next season must be better, says Ferdinand

The Red Devils ended the 2004-05 campaign emptyhanded and the England defender, who said he is still in negotiations over a new contract knows a repeat of this year is unacceptable. He said: “Next season has to be better. At a club like United you’ve got no divine right to win trophies but with the traditions we’ve got and the players we have, we should be fighting for trophies until the end of the season.

“We didn’t do that this season and the fans deserve a lot more.”

Ferdinand appeared to feel the pain of missing out on silverware more than most and left the field in tears after United’s penalty-shoot-out defeat to Arsenal in the FA Cup final last month.

“It’s still a bit of a sore subject,” he said.

“It was one of the most disappointing days of my career so far, it was my first cup fina and it didn’t end on a good note for us.”

Ferdinand thought he had given United a first-half lead but the effort was disallowed for offside.

“My heart jumped out of my mouth when I put that ball in the net but the linesman’s flag was up and it wasn’t to be.” “That’s just life and you’ve just got to get on with it.”
