Shels ease into third round with easy win over Finn Harps

SHELBOURNE defeated Finn Harps 4-1 to ease into the third round of the FAI Carlsberg Cup - wrapping this tie up before half-time on Saturday night.

Ollie Cahill put Shels in front after 21 minutes when heading home Thomas Morgan’s right-wing cross.

Shels increased their lead when Jason Byrne slotted home a penalty after he had been fouled in the box.

Byrne was involved in the third goal on 43 minutes when his return pass to Wes Hoolahan was finished with a superb chip. Gary Crossan got a goal back for Harps on 70 minutes before Jason Byrne finished the scoring for the night.

Glebe North’s dreams of Cup glory were over inside seven minutes as Kildare County’s Barry O’Connor punished poor defending to score twice before going on to complete his hat-trick in their second-round clash.

The first of O’Connor’s goals came on five minutes when O’Connor was left unmarked to head home Ger O’Brien’s corner. Glebe keeper Gary Lester pushed Alan Kelly’s header onto the bar, but the rebound fell kindly for O’Connor to force home his second.

Darren McKenna added the third from a James Igwilo cross on 56 minutes with O’Connor getting his third two minutes later.
