Givens pays tribute to McCarthy legacy of quality players

DON GIVENS yesterday paid tribute to Mick McCarthy for the quality of the squad of international players he left behind for the incoming manager.

Givens, adamant he wants to return to U21 level with Ireland, said McCarthy had worked very hard over the past six years to reduce the age profile of the Irish squad and that he had succeeded admirably.

"He was left with no option but to change things round when he came in with so many players reaching retirement age," said Givens. "But it must stand to his credit that Ireland can travel to Athens and achieve a draw even though 11 regulars are not available. That is a reflection of the good work he has done."
