Shels pay the penalty as City bounce back to their best
Shelbourne’s cause was undermined when they lost centre-back Jim Gannon as early as the 55th minute but they never abandoned hope or lost their drive as they made Cork fight desperately for the points in a high-energy contest of constant incident.
Gannon was shown the red card for an off-the-ball incident involving George O’Callaghan at a stage of the game when emotions were riding high. Shelbourne were still smarting from a penalty decision that went against them within fifteen seconds of the start of the second half and trailed 1-2 at the time.
