Italian federation calls for electronic aids for referees

ITALY’S soccer federation has called on the sport’s governing bodies to allow referees to use electronic aids such as video replays.

In a letter to FIFA and UEFA, the federation said yesterday it was time soccer mirrored the use of electronic hardware in tennis, rugby and American football.

“In a faster and faster football where players are savvy, (referees’) eyes are not able to compete always with tens of video cameras around the pitch,” Franco Carraro, head of the FIGC federation, said in his letter.
