“Mark has suffered a recurrence of his hamstring problem,” manager Steve McClaren said. “It is hugely disappointing for Mark and the club but he won’t play again this season.”

The Australian, who had been out of action since December, returned for the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace last Saturday but his comeback lasted only 11 minutes.

“We felt he was ready to play on Saturday but it wasn’t to be,” said McClaren. “Everyone is frustrated, including Mark, because it has taken longer than any of us would have wanted.

“What we are now focusing on is ensuring he gets all the correct treatment so that he is ready for the start of next season.”

Viduka, 29, joined the Teesiders from Leeds for ÂŁ4.5 million last July.
