Rangers hit Motherwell for five

Rangers 5 Motherwell 1

Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos had the most eventful afternoon by heading two of the goals in a game that also featured a rare opener from Maurice Ross and goals from more regular scorers Fernando Ricksen and Nacho Novo.

Motherwell had looked losers from the off after falling two goals behind within 10 minutes but although David Partridge headed them back into the game three minutes later it was not to be a lifeline.

There was no hiding place for Well’s players on the expansive Hampden pitch but at least they had fared better than Dundee United, who had been thrashed 7-1 there in the semi-final.

For Rangers manager Alex McLeish it was his sixth trophy since joining the club.

RANGERS: Waterreus, Ross, Kyrgiakos, Malcolm, Ball, Buffel, Ferguson, Ricksen, Vignal (Alex Rae 79), Novo (Thompson 84), Prso.

MOTHERWELL: Marshall, Corrigan, Craigan, Partridge, Hammell, McBride (Paul Quinn 83), Leitch, O’Donnell, Paterson (Fitzpatrick 65), Scott McDonald, Foran (Clarkson 65).

Referee: M McCurry.
