Greece, unfancied and even unconsidered before the tournament, played with astonishing authority and confidence to dump an un-inspired France out of the championship.

The level of football in a disappointing contest was not exceptional but that was principally due to the lack of form of the reigning champions. Greece looked to play well within themselves as they dictated the tempo of the game with clever football and intelligent tactics and they dominated from the opening whistle.
