Late Kahn clanger gifts Real a draw
The German international keeper allowed a seemingly harmless long- range free kick from Roberto Carlos to roll under his body with seven minutes left of a lively battle that Bayern had dominated.
Dutch striker Roy Makaay headed the Germans into a deserved lead in the 75th minute of a game played in freezing temperatures.
Bayern's form this season has been erratic but the German champions rose to the occasion and were clearly the better side in the 15th competitive European clash between two ofEurope's football powerhouses.
Their prestigious visitors, who had lost on their seven previous visits to the Olympic stadium, failed to shine but will now fancy their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.
Real salvaged the draw from their trip to Bayern despite the home side running the show for most of the match.
The sell-out crowd was treated to a lively beginning. Roberto Carlos almost gave the home team the perfect start on three minutes when he sliced his clearance and the ball ran just wide of his own goal.
Two minutes later Ronaldo made a good run down the left put failed to pick out Raul in the middle.
On 10 minutes, Ze Roberto found the always-dangerous Makaay on the edge of the area and the Dutch striker forced Iker Casillas into his first save of the evening. Soon after Bayern had another good chance, but Pizarro's effort was over the bar.
Bayern continued to have the better chances and more of the game in the following minutes and the German champions succeeded in preventing Madrid's highly-rated attackers moving forward. Ten minutes from half-time Casillas came to the rescue again when Michael Ballack, who passed a late fitness test, and Makaay combined to find Owen Hargreaves, whose vicious shot was well saved.
In the dying seconds of the first half Ronaldo showed Real were still willing to win the match, gathering the ball after a Samuel Kuffour slip and forcing Oliver Kahn into his only real save of the opening 45 minutes.
Real were back on the defensive within seconds as Casillas again had to save from Ballack.
Despite being denied time and time again in the second period Bayern continued to push players forward and with a quarter of an hour left they were finally rewarded.
Pizarro managed to skip around Raul Bravo on the right and sent a superb cross into the middle, where Makaay was waiting to head home.
But as Bayern were looking forward to a one-goal advantage in Madrid in two weeks' time, Roberto Carlos struck. The free-kick was not moving at great pace, but took a deflection to mislead Kahn, who saw the ball slip beneath him and into the net.
