CHRIS HUGHTON yesterday rejoiced in the knowledge that, in Damien Duff, Ireland have a player capable of inspiring the team in tomorrow’s critical European Championship tie against Russia (Lansdowne, 4pm), regardless of where he plays.

Hughton, assistant manager to Brian Kerr, claimed no decision had been made on the role to be allocated to Duff, but suggested in the seven months he has been involved with the Irish squad, he had seen continued improvement in the Dubliner’s ability.

The dynamic Irish forward has sparkled at international level as a flank player or as a central striker, alongside Robbie Keane or immediately behind him.
