Wigan boss hoping Connolly will be jewel in the crown

WIGAN manager Paul Jewell is adamant his squad can hold their own in the Premiership despite being frustrated by the transfer window.

Jewell managed to sign just one new face, Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly, despite working right up until the midnight deadline.

The Latics boss made a number of failed bids in recent weeks, notably a £10m move for Michael Owen, £5m offers for Norwich’s Dean Ashton and Turkey international star Fatih Tekke, as well as a £450,000 bid for 36-year-old Bradford veteran Dean Windass.
