McCarthy to quit as Ireland manager

After agreeing a severance package with the FAI, McCarthy is expected to confirm the end to his six-years reign as Ireland's international team manager on RTÉ's Late, Late Show on Friday night.

The FAI do not expect to appoint his successor before January. They plan to set up a committee of three officers of the association to canvas for candidates and to engage in a round of interviews - just as they did when they appointed McCarthy as successor to Jack Charlton in 1996.
