NEWCASTLE supporters are delighted and relieved that the club are on the verge of completing the club-record signing of Michael Owen from Real Madrid.

The club have yet to score in four Premiership games this season and Mark Jensen, editor of Newcastle fanzine The Mag, insisted it was vital they brought in a proven goalscorer before the transfer window closes.

Jensen said: “My first feeling is one of relief.

“Newcastle are in a terrible position and it’s a relief that not only have we signed a goalscorer, we have signed the England centre-forward.

“He is the new Alan Shearer for us, he’s the one who can take over from Alan and score 20 goals in the Premiership.

“Everybody knows what he can do - none more so than us after he scored goal after goal against Newcastle.”

Jensen says Owen will have a huge impact on morale at St James’ Park.

“Hopefully (the signing) will lift everyone within the club, not just on the pitch but everybody at the training ground too, because this was desperately needed.”
