Strachan opens door for Keane’s Celtic move

CELTIC manager Gordon Strachan has expressed a desire to speak to Roy Keane about a possible move north of the border.

The club issued a statement upon Keane’s exit from Manchester United, inviting the 34-year-old to make the first move. Keane has yet to reveal where his future lies, but Strachan backed the club’s words and has opened the door for discussions with the former Republic of Ireland captain.

He said: “Last week we made it clear that if at any time Roy would like to speak to us about his future and Celtic’s, we would be only too happy to speak to him and I fully support that statement.

“The board and I had discussed exactly what to say about the situation and I agree with the others. He was a magnificent player and servant for Manchester United who knows all about Celtic.”

However former United team-mate Teddy Sheringham has urged Keane not to join Celtic.

“I would love Roy Keane here at West Ham,” said Sheringham. “He’s a fantastic footballer and would improve our team tenfold. I think he has at least two years left at the top so it would be a big blow to the Premiership if he leaves now. I would certainly be very surprised if he goes to Celtic.

“He’s far too good to go up into the Scottish League. It would be a waste of an amazing talent.

“I actually think he might surprise us all and join a club in the top five or six - and if he does he will push them up into Europe.

“And there’s been a lot of speculation linking him with clubs at the bottom of the table too. I really think if one of those clubs did get him it would guarantee them survival.”
