THE most immediate result of Ireland’s elimination from the European Championship is relegation into the second seeded group for the World Cup draw that will be made in Frankfurt in December.

Ireland were seeded in the top group for the European Championship, but two defeats by Switzerland and the loss of five of six points to Russia mean Ireland can expect a tougher draw in the World Cup.

Before the World Cup kicks off next year manager, Brian Kerr, intends to embark on a busy programme with twin objectives. One is obviously to identify players of potential, the other is to educate Ireland’s team in dealing with the subtleties of different tactical formations.
