Struggling UCD upset fancied Bohemians

UCD2

Struggling UCD had only managed one point all season beforehand but punched well above their weight before McDonnell delivered the knockout blow with just minutes to go.

Alan Cawley put UCD ahead after 20 minutes from the free spot and it was no more than lively College deserved.

Bohs captain Kevin Hunt pulled down the influential McDonnell 20 yards out and Cawley swept home a dazzling effort.

The Students should have doubled their advantage on the half-hour mark but John Martin struck badly back off the upright from 10 yards.

Bohs looked to have punished UCD with the iron fist when Fergal Harkin hit his second in three games after 53 minutes, forcing home from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

But that was as good as it got for Bohs and McDonnell had the last word when he hammered home from close range following Niall Donnelly’s late blocked shot.

UCD: Jennings; Sullivan, McNally, McAuley (O’Donnell 84), Davey; Whelan (Donnelly 77), McDonnell, Cawley, J Martin; Griffin, Gallen (R Martin 80).
