Sanchez goal clinches bronze for Uruguay

A SUPERB late goal by Uruguay winger Vicente Sanchez secured a 2-1 victory over defending champions Colombia and clinched the Copa America’s bronze medal.

Sanchez’s goal went some way to making amends for his miss during the semi-final penalty shoot-out which saw Brazil progress to the final against Argentina.

Uruguay coach Jorge Fossati fielded several players who have not played a major role so far in the competition but they justified his decision at the high altitude venue of Cuzco. After only three minutes, Uruguay took the lead when Fabian Estoyanoff applied the final touch following fine work by Sanchez and they should have extended their lead shortly afterwards as two chances went begging.

Colombia levelled in the 71st minute from the penalty spot with Sergio Herrera finding the target. John Viafara had been brought down in the box.

But with the game seemingly set for a penalty shoot-out, Sanchez produced a deft chip to ensure Uruguay finished third in the tournament.
