Sunderland win with single goal

Dean Whitehead’s second-half goal earned Sunderland a deserved, but controversial, 1-0 win at beleaguered Rotherham, who remain stranded at the foot of the Coca-Cola Championship.

Whitehead appeared to be in an offside position when he received Stephen Elliott’s through-ball, but the linesman did not raise his flag which gave the former Oxford midfielder the opportunity to loft the ball over Rotherham goalkeeper Mike Pollitt.
