Kewell on mark as Reds rout Aberdeen
Kewell put the Reds 3-1 up at Pittodrie after goals from Danny Murphy and the in-form Emile Heskey had turned the game around following David Zdrilic’s first-minute goal for Aberdeen. Neil Mellor’s brace completed the scoring.
Merseyside rivals Everton were beaten 2-0 in Holland by Roda JC. David Moyes’ men fell behind after a quarter of an hour when Tom Soetaers and Cristiano exchanged passes and the former rifled the ball past Paul Gerrard. Cristiano then doubled Everton’s agony when Gerrard fumbled Soetaers’ aimless ball over the top and the Brazilian striker nipped in to score.
Arsenal outclassed Rangers to record a 3-0 Ibrox win with Edu, Lauren and Sol Campbell all on the scoresheet.
Lauren also had a penalty saved as the Gunners dominated the final hour following the false dawn of a strong start from Alex McLeish’s men. Arsenal had offered little in return but took the lead in the 32nd minute through Edu’s long-range effort, although it needed a hefty deflection off Maurice Ross to leave goalkeeper Stefan Klos helpless.
Arsenal sent on former Rangers favourite Giovanni van Bronckhorst for Ray Parlour on the restart and within two minutes Patrick Vieira had won a penalty when he went down under a Bob Malcolm challenge.
Lauren had little difficulty in beating Klos from the spot to double his side’s lead.
The home defence was missing at the other end when Campbell rose to head a Dennis Bergkamp free kick past Klos.
The German came out on top in the 78th minute by saving another Lauren penalty after Craig Moore had kicked Fredrik Ljungberg over in the box, with the Australian booked.
Veteran goalkeeper Dave Beasant played for Fulham as the Londoners went down 2-0 at Livingston.
